Rutstroemia maritima?
William Slosse,

Today, February 11, 2026, we found the following Rutstroemia in the drifting dunes at Bredene (Belgian coast).The habitat and substrate (dead leaves of Ammophila arenaria) suggest Rutstroemia maritima.
° Crystals present in the texture
° Croziers present
° Ascus tips euamyloid (in Melzer, my Lugol unfortunately appears to be degenerated...).
A sporee is currently being prepared to measure spores in water.
Can this observation be confirmed, or do further preparations need to be made/examined?
Thanks in advance,
William

Re : Rutstroemia maritima?
The rather thin apical dome looks typical to me. Please do the spore photo in water to see living spores.

Re : Rutstroemia maritima?
And here are the spores from a sporee and measured in water:
(13.6) 14.1 - 17.8 (18.4) × (5.8) 6 - 7.5 (7.9) µm
Q = (2.2) 2.3 - 2.58 (2.6) ; N = 20
Me = 15.6 × 6.5 µm ; Qe = 2.4
(13.6) 14.1 - 17.8 (18.4) × (5.8) 6 - 7.5 (7.9) µm
Q = (2.2) 2.3 - 2.58 (2.6) ; N = 20
Me = 15.6 × 6.5 µm ; Qe = 2.4
Additional questions:
1. According to Index Fungorum, the current name is Clarireedia maritima. Is this nomenclature preferable?
2. Should this species be listed as Clarireedia cf maritima, or is it clearly described and recognized as such?
Thanks in advance,
William

Re : Rutstroemia maritima?
This is a full match. The genus is a matter of taste. From DNA Clarireedia is a well-defined group, but from morphology I see hardly any chance to separate it from the core of Rutstroemia.
In my folders I use Clarireedia. There you can see the high similarity among the collections on Ammophila.
