Small white discomycete
Francois Guay, 15-04-2025 15:06
Francois GuayI found this small white disco on decaying deciduous wood in Québec, Canada.

•Asci: 40.8–45.1 × 4.1–5.4 µm, IKI+

•Some paraphyses seem to be IKI+; they turn all blue

•Spores: 5.3–7.3 × 1.9–2.7 µm

Here is the iNat link for photos: https://www.inaturalist.ca/observations/270017818

Any ideas on what it could be?
Thank you

François

Re : Small white discomycete
Interesting! Such amyloid vacuoles exist, for instence in Rutstroemia alnobetulae as I remember. But in such a hyaloscyphoid species I am surprized. Perhaps the paraphyses must be alive in order to react? Is the reaction also in MLZ?

Re : Small white discomycete
Thank you, Zotto. Yes, the specimens were alive. I have not tried MLZ, but I will do so today and keep you updated. I will also send some specimens for sequencing.

Re : Small white discomycete
Hi Zotto,
I did the microscopy in MLZ and found no amyloid reaction in the paraphyses. I tried again with IKI and got some positive reaction; some paraphyses are turning blue, though not all of them.

Looking at the specimens again macroscopically, I noticed that some have a small pseudostipe with a blackish coloration. Do you have any idea what genus this could belong to?
Thanks
François

Re : Small white discomycete
I tend to assume a Pezizellaceae because of the VBs though only faintly refractive. Lack of hairs contradict a Ciliolarina. Macroscopically I also thought a Leptodontidium which is another family (Leptodontidiaceae).

Very interesting, Thank you Zotto, I will update this post when I get the DNA sequence!
