Lachnum subvirgineum (?)
Ethan Crenson, 14-05-2026 05:36
Hi all,

I haven't paid much attention to Lachnum or related species until recently. I was hoping to get an opinion on this one while I get the hang of these.

This is from New York City. It's on manufactured wood, specifically a wooden stake used in landscaping. Unknown whether the wood is hardwood or conifer.

Largest apothecia just under 2mm in diameter, height with stipe 2mm tall.

Spores
fusiform-cylindrical, straight, low oil content—just a few small guttules
7.7-11.9 x 1.7-2.5µm
Me: 10.3 x 2.2µm
Q: 3.7-5.4
Qe: 4.6
N=52

Asci
53-63 x 4.5-5.5µm
IKI+
Croziers+

Paraphyses
68-111 x 3.5-4.9µm
lanceolate
extending up to 12.3-18.8µm above hymenium
as far as I can tell they are without VBs (or if there are VBs they are not very refractive). Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hairs
Occasionally, but not always capitate, echinulate ornamentation all the way to the ends
width at widest point 4.7-6.9µm
No oxylate crystals so far as I can tell.

Is this L. subvirgineum, or its North American doppelgänger?

Re : Lachnum subvirgineum (?)
I agree. Your single sharp paraphysis shows empty vacules and plasma between, no VBs.

Hair length would be important, not paraphysis length which is a vague issue as there is no definable basal end.

The hairs are shorter in L. subvirgineum than in virgineum, around 80-90.

I have a lot of cf. and aff. subvirgineum sequences but non which is certain.

Re : Lachnum subvirgineum (?)
Thank you, Zotto.  I have measurements of the longest marginal hairs which range from around 80-110µm if I am measuring properly from the base of the hairs.

Re : Lachnum subvirgineum (?)
O.k. The hair apices look very typical! L. virgineum hairs go up to 130 µm as I remember.
