Psilachnum-like
Marc Detollenaere, 17-02-2024 07:15
Marc DetollenaereDear forum,

On debarked Pinus I found some small discs with the looks of Hyaloscypha. Asci were 8-spored , 45x6.7µ. Spores were hyalines, scutullate 8.5x2.8µ and contained several small guttules.Asci were IKI positive.Hairs looked cylindric to me with glassy aspect, 40-50µ, not tapering.
The only genus that was close with Nordic Macromycetes I was Psilachnum does this does not occur on wood.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re : Psilachnum-like
Possible is the group of Psilocistella quercina and Resinoscypha (Arachnopeziza) variepilosa, which are not clearly solved.

Re : Psilachnum-like
Hi,

These hyaloscyphoids with multiseptate thinwalled hairs are really not solved yet. Resinoscypha is an option, check with Cotton blue for cyanophilous substance inside the hairs. Psilocistella quercina comes close (morphology / phylogenetics), but is not conspecific with R. variepilosa. The thing is that there are others as well .. !

Resinoscypha (variepilosa) is fairly common in old growth forests (Picea especially) and the morphology is variable: young fruitbodies have mostly hairs that look like "pillars", distinctly wider than in the more mature fruitbodies where the proportions are more like in this sample (wether it is a Resinoscypha or not) and as in our recent drawings (Kosonen et al 2020). I was first sure that these are different species, but vast testing /sequencing proved otherwise. R. monoseptata I have not observed live.

Re : Psilachnum-like
Hi everyone,
I also thought P. quercina has similar characters to this collection, but could it actually be found on Pinus ?

Thanks to all for the response.
I examined some young fruitbodies as Timo asked. The hairs look similar to me.

Re : Psilachnum-like
Sorry, I can't make up my mind on this one. Resinoscypha has also occasional amyloid inclusions. You could check those (no MLZ/IKI slides there right?).

It looks like a handsome sample and if you have a chance to send it to Turku or sequence otherwise that would be lovely. ...I have received a number of beautiful samples through AscoFrance and the majority of them are still in the publication pipeline, so I am almost embarassed to ask. but this one could maybe make it faster, just working on these specifically. :-)

Timo,

If you give me your address, I will sent you the collection this week. In fresh state or dried?
