Propolomyces versicolor on Salix?
Jenny Seawright, 10-02-2015 00:23
Jenny SeawrightHello all,

This seems to be Propolomyces versicolor on dead Salix branches but the spores in my specimens were considerably larger than the sizes given in Ellis & Ellis, being 24-32(-34) x (7-)9-10(-12) µm........

Confirmation or correction would be much appreciated!

With regards,
Jenny

Hello Jenny
I wouldn't have thought that those measurements would necessarily rule out Propolis versicolor/farinosa.
You have Zotto's images I think? compare with his HB6362 in
Ascomycota\Rhytismatales-Triblidiales\Propoloid fungi

best wishes
Chris

Hi Jenny & Chris

yes, but 6362 has a cf. and seems to be intermediate between farinosa and var. betulae.

Helpful is also the ascus size, but restricted to one state, either living or dead, perhaps also the size of the large LBs in the spores (here they are very small!).

I will try today to include my new key on my homepage, hope that my son will help...

Re : Propolomyces versicolor on Salix?
Thank you Chris and Zotto - looking at the images and the key mine do seem intermediate between the two.
I didn't measure the asci but with the exception of a few spores (one shown below) the LBs were either small or not apparent. Does the size of LBs vary with maturity or remain constant?

Chemicals are on order and once they arrive I'll investigate closer!

With regards,
Jenny

Re : Propolomyces versicolor on Salix?
Here the drops are quite large. Sporen contents must be evaluated critically. Best is to have living asci, then you can better estimate what is mature and ready for discharge, because only then you can use spore contents efficiently.
