Orbilia?
William Slosse, 06-03-2026 17:51
William SlosseGood evening all,

On March 4, 2026, I found the following ascomycetes on the underside of a rotten Ilex aquifolium leaf in the De Vaanders nature reserve, Beernem (Belgium).
These were semi-hyaline, yellowish disks with hyphae anchored in the vegetative tissue.
At first, I suspected Trochila ilicina, but microscopy indicated a completely different genus/species.
Could this possibly be Orbilia?
Any suggestions?

° Apothecia maximum 1.3 mm
° Ectal excipulum textura prismatica
° Medicular excipulum textura globulosa
° Asci IKI-, no croziers
° Paraphyses cylindrical, sometimes capitate. Often with an amorphous apical blob. Without refractive vacuoles.
° Spores filiform, evenly curved, hyaline (?).
Measurement of free spores in water:
(9.1) 9.9 - 11.8 (12.2) × (0.6) 0.8 - 1 (1.1) µm
Me = 10.8 × 0.9 µm (n=15)

Many thanks in advance,
William

Re : Orbilia?
This looks much like Orbilia auricolor.  Good would be the anamorph because O. oligospora is only recognizable from the conidia.
