This tiny (0.2 mm wide) brown cup fungus was growing on a decaying Betula leaf.

Asci 8-spored, IKI+(b). The asci have prominent basal protuberances, but seem to lack proper croziers.


There were some cylindrical cells without contents that might be paraphyses or marginal cells.


The excipulum seems to be of textura porrecta.


Spores:


9.6 - 11.89 (11.9) × (2.5) 2.53 - 3.28 (3.3) µm
Q = 3 - 4.1 ; N = 5
Me = 10.2 × 2.8 µm ; Qe = 3.6

I imagined Hyaloscypha fuscostipitata but that has definitely smaller spores and particularly strongly tapering hairs, also a dark base. And you are right: the ascus protuberance does not fuse. What seems to be paraphyses is not clearly alive, are you sure that the fungus has no VBs?

Thanks, I'm not entirely sure about VBs -- maybe the fruitbody wasn't in the best condition. Wish I had some extra material. There was some brown pigment on the outside, maybe from crushed cells?

There are globose bodies with that colour which could point to multiguttulate VBs, but not sure.
