Help with a Pleosporal.
Josep Torres, 01-07-2025 23:37
Josep TorresHello.
A Pleosporal symbiotic organism located and photographed the day before yesterday in a garden area in the Dominican Republic, sprouting from the ground on a small trunk under a mango tree (Mangifera indica), although I admit the trunk could also have come from a nearby ornamental shrub.
Tiny blackish ascomata, deeply embedded in the bark, measuring between 0.24 and 0.33 mm.
Asci that appear octosporic, with no apparent reaction to Melzer's Reagent, with measurements in water of (74.8) 74.81 - 79.59 (79.6) × (33.8) 33.81 - 43 µm.
Pseudoparaphyses are abundant, filiform, and poorly or unbranched.
Ascospores between cylindrical and fusiform, with three septa, these septa more pronounced in Melzer, with a marked constriction of the septa, four large lipid droplets, one in each cell, and four small guttulae, with measurements in water of:
(27) 27.7 - 32.4 (33.3) × (9.8) 9.9 - 12.2 (12.9) µm
Q = (2.5) 2.6 - 2.9 (3) ; N = 18
Me = 30.2 × 11.1 µm ; Qe = 2.7
Based on its microscopy, my first choice would be Massarina sp.; I don't know if I'm on the right track. I'll see if anyone can confirm this, since with this I'd be satisfied with just reaching the genus. Any feedback from you will be appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance.
Best regards.

Re : Help with a Pleosporal.
Any suggestions?................................................
In the absence of any suggestions, it would be wise to leave the topic as Massarina cf.
