Arthoniaceae key
Jennifer Fiorentino, 09-12-2022 15:52
I am looking for an Arthoniaceae key which covers Southern European species as well. Have been trying to identify two different corticolous species of probably non-lichenised species. Both have pycnidia which produce long 8-12um conidia rather than the bacilliform conidia quoted for most species. None of my lichen keys gave me any reliable ID. So I am suspecting they are corticolous non-lichenised Arthoniaceae.

Can anyone suggest reliable keys which could be used? Thank you in advance.

Re : Arthoniaceae key
Hola Jennifer,
Yo tengo "A KEY TO THE LICHEN-FORMING, PARASITIC, PARASYMBIOTIC AND SAPROPHYTIC FUNGI OCCURRING ON LICHENS IN THE BRITISH ISLES" D. L. HAWKSWORTH
En dicha clave, los deuteromycetes empiezan en el punto 172.Puedes intentarlo.
 Te lo envío por privado.
Saludos.

Re : Arthoniaceae key
Dear Franz

many thanks for your comment. I use keys in ITALIC on a daily basis. I love them! Key 42 does not work out. Key 47 is more ideal as the apothecia of my specimen are clearly arthoinoid. in fact Key 47 leads me to Naevia dispersa.....with the one problem I mentioned above. N. dispersa is quoted as having bacilliform conidia but I keep finding longish conidia. Hence my dilemma.

Thanks and cheers

Re : Arthoniaceae key
Hi Jennifer,
I use the "Italic 7.0" keys every day. I adore them too. Almost all my identifications are thanks to these keys. But when I study a fresh lichen, I rarely see pycnidia and conidia, although I have seen that said page describes them.
I always wonder how they can tell if they are pycnidia typical of the species or a contamination produced by a lichenicolous fungus.
Is it possible that your fungus is a parasite that was born in the thallus?

Re : Arthoniaceae key
What you write is very plausible.

I will check lichenicolous fungi growing on Naevia which produce anomorphs similar to what I am observing. Thanks for the tip.

https://italic.units.it/index.php?procedure=idkeys

These are lichen keys mostly but some non-lichenised lichens figure in.
