Pachyphlodes Melanoxanthus ?
Ronald Morsink, 22-10-2022 15:13
Hello,

I found this 0.5 cm truffle on a stream bed.
Trees in the area are larch, Scots pine, oak and beech.
Half in the ground and half out of the ground in the Netherlands.

Ascoma: globose to slightly flattened, black. Surface covered with low warts
Peridium black, with narrow warty cortex.
Gleba hyaline composed of a gelatinous matrix of small globular cells, with yellow veins radiating
Asci: 140-160 mu x 40mu. 8 spores in the asci.
Spores: 17-22 mu with ornamentation.
Ornamentation 3-4 mu.

Sincerely,
Ronald Morsink

Re : Pachyphloeus ?
Hello Ronald,
a Pachyphloeus for sure. I find the key, description and fotos in Montecchi & Sarasini often not fitting collections in a satisfying way. Unfortunately, no modern key seems to be available (?).
Yours, Lothar

Re : Pachyphloeus ?
Hello Lothar,

Thank you for your comment.

In the book Nordic macromycetes Vol1 Ascomycetes there is a key with 3 species:
P. conglomeratus, P. citrinus and P. melanoxanthus.

P. melanoxanthus comes closest to the description and findings.

Here an atricle about Pachyphloeus melanoxanthus:

but i'm not sure

Ronald.

You should use Cotton Blue to get a better view of spore ornamentation. This could help to propose an ID
