Elaphomyces with atypically large ascospores
Alex Akulov, 24-08-2022 17:24
Alex AkulovDear colleagues,
I am asking for your help in identifying the Elaphomyces species. It has flattened fruiting bodies 3 x 2.5 x 1 cm, a thin light-colored finely verrucose peridium, and very large ascospores (37.5-) 40.2-42.7 (-44.4 µm). The fungus developed inside the forest floor of a fir forest in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine.

I couldn't identify it using the key of Paz et coauthors, 2017.

Sincerely,
Alex

At least Elaphomyces borealis has spores that large.

Hi Alex,

good to hear from you!

I don't know why Castellano et al. 2021: 120 are writing: "Elaphomyces
decipiens has larger spores (32–38(–42) µm, mean = 35.4 µm)
and low plate-like warts." They don't cite a source.

I don't see such spore size in other literature for decipiens.

Best regards

Martin
