Podospora? on rabbit dung.
William de Jong, 29-11-2021 21:15
Hi everyone,

For the first time I tried to identify a microfungi on rabit dung. I think I found a Podospora species.
I'm afraid the identification of which species of Podospora it is is going to be difficult with the information I have.. Or is it still possible?
Details: Perithecium glabrous. Spores measure 33 x 20 µm. Also spermatia (I think?) present. Exoperidium of polygonal cells. See pictures.

Kind regards, William

Re : Podospora? on rabbit dung.
Hi, the photos are unfortunately not optimal, there can be several species, such as P. decipiens or P. pyriformis. One should be able to see more like the caudae of the spores or the neck area. I don't have any decent photos of P. pyriformis.

Regards Peter.

And also P. pleiospora with asci containing 16 spores. I also found species having asci with 32 spores but cannot find them right now. They all appeared on rabbit dung.

Hi Peter and Joop,

Thank you both for your replies!
Many thanks also for the pictures and the article.
All very interesting, and helpful for the next time I find a Podospora species.

Kind regards,
William

Hello Willem

If you culture some rabbit dung you'll soon get Podospora and Schizothecium species!

If you want I can send you some literature to help . . .

That's a good idea!

Thanks for your offer! I would be very pleased if you could send me some literature, I will send you my e-mailadres in a personal message.

Re : Podospora? on rabbit dung.
Dear people,

Thanks for all the help. Today I found several other Podospora-perithecia on the one rabbit dropping.
However, I didn't succeed at all in identifying the species.. I need some practical advice.

When I finally succeeded in 'extracting' a complete perithecium, I didn't succeed in getting the whole asci out. And with too much preasure the whole stuff gets squashed. How do you guys handle this? What is the trick in showing complete asci, and hence, spores with caudae?

@Joop, I found the tubercles, indeed the upper peridium / lower neck is studded with these protruding cells! (However, very difficult to photograph with my cheap micro-camera).

Here some additional pictures assuming it's all one Podospora-species. Probably, there can occur more than one species on one rabbit dropping?
