white bulbils on algae
carl van den broeck, 12-12-2020 22:49
carl van den broeckHello
Today I found very small round white fungi between Bryum capillare and algae. They lay loose on the substrate. I thought I was dealing with Burgoa or related but those are basidiomycetes. These fungi I found are ascomycetes.
The bulbils are spherical and measure between 0.5 and 1.2 mm.
Ascen uniserate, thick-walled, J-
Paraphyses septic, no grainy and non-colored content, tips J +
Spur average 17 x 9 mu, oval and buds constricted
In some bulbils conidien is present in large numbers between cobweb-like hyphae.
Gray dune, algae, moss, salix, acer, quercus
Koksijde, Belgian coast
Does anyone have an idea?

Re : white bulbils on algae
This should be a Mniaecia, perhaps M. nivea. You should use Lugol, not Melzer's, because of the hemiamyloid reaction. There was one collecton of Mniaecia which had a red reacting apical ring, and with MLZ this would react negative. (after KOH-pretreatment it would react blue). Other Mniaecia spp. are indeed negative.

Hello Zotto
Thanks for the tip, you must be right. I don't find much literature, I see that there is a key from you (2003) but can't find it anywhere on the internet !? I think it's also a rare fungus, right?

If it is possible?
Thanks

There exists an article by De Sloover 2001 and one by Caillet & Vadam 2004.

My key without ensurance.
