Orbilia on my mind
Juuso Äikäs, 26-06-2019 14:58
I happened to stumble on an Orbilia once again. These were growing on a fallen trunk of Betula in a moist, swampy place.

I managed to measure a few spores and they were about 8-9.5 x 1.5-2 micrometers in size. The asci were about 4-5 micrometers wide. The photos are from samples crushed in water (except one spore photo).

Could this pass as Orbilia luteorubella?

Re : Orbilia on my mind
Yes, I think this is this species. Is it a standing swampy water with little flow? That would be typical, also the somewhat orange colour. We have not many records of this probably not at all rare species. Would you mind sending me the collection sat?

Re : Orbilia on my mind
Thanks. There wasn't any standing water close to these if I remember correctly. But it's been dry here for a while so maybe it was different earlier. Picea abies and Betula were the dominant trees and there was plenty of Sphagnum. Sorry, but what does 'collection sat' mean?

Re : Orbilia on my mind
Oh, a miswriting, I would like to note collection date, finder, coordinates, and substrate. If you don't know the wood, at least coniferous wood is easy to recognize.

Re : Orbilia on my mind
Ah, OK, no problem. Date: 25.06.2019, finder: Juuso Äikäs, coordinates: 60.370099 N 25.755942 E (WGS84), substrate: Betula.

Re : Orbilia on my mind
Thanks! Ah yes, you said Betula. This is SE of Porvoo. From Finland we only know the type collection of Karsten's O. luteorubella, which is a bit uncertain because of the similar Orbilia rosea with Anguillospora anamorph and more rose-lilaceous apothecia growing at running water.

Re : Orbilia on my mind
I tried to evaluate spore size and spore body length. You do not have a scale to your pics?

Spore length varies much more than 8-9.5. I arrive at 7.5-11 x 1.4-1.5 µm, and SBs 5-5.5 µm long when taking the middle.

In the meantime I more tend to Orbilia rosea. This can only be decided by the anamorph or by DNA.

Re : Orbilia on my mind
Well my equipment and skills are not from the best end so the measurements might not be the most accurate. Especially when everything is so small and moving in water. I have a sample drying that I could post if you're interested.

Re : Orbilia on my mind
So there is no fixed magnification in your photos? They are quite accurate for this smallness.

The only I can do is giving for sequencing, not sure at which occasion.´

The geology is acidic there, do you know?
Juuso Äikäs, 27-06-2019 22:01
Re : Orbilia on my mind
One micrometer should be about 19.85 pixels. I'm pretty sure the geology is acidic.

Re : Orbilia on my mind
So now I arrive at 8-12 x 1.5-1.7 µm, and SBs 5.5-6 µm long. So long SBs I never saw in both species.

Re : Orbilia on my mind
OK, interesting! Maybe I'll try to look at the sample closer a bit later.
