Parasite on Trochila ilicina?
Vitus Schäfftlein, 28-04-2026 20:33
Hello,

I found Trochila ilicina on Ilex aquifolium (1). Curiously, the part visible on the leaf undersurface happened to have white spots with a central small hole (2). Whilst separating the white part, a macroscopically visible cloud of white conidia escaped from the hole. Under the microscope, I could observe massive amounts of said conidia (3, 4). The conidiophores mostly consisted of just one conidiogenous cell, some were branched once. The conidia themselves measured 12,5 ± 0,4 µm × 2,3 ± 0,3 µm, Q = 5,6 ± 0,7 (5). Does anyone have an idea what species this could be?

Best regards,
Vitus

Isn't this the anamorph? It reminds me of the ?Cryptocline anamorph of Tr. laurocerasi.

Re : Parasite on Trochila ilicina?
You are obviously right, Martin. On Prunus laurocerasus it is Phacidium lauri, and on Ilex either the same, or Phacidium lacerum.

Re : Parasite on Trochila ilicina?
Thanks for the replies! The study you cite, Martin, does not explain the morphological differences between Phacidium lauri and Phacidium lacerum. Do you two know whether there are ways to morphologically distinguish these two species, or any more literature on it? I'm asking because it is supposed to be mapped.

Best regards,

Vitus

Hallo Vitus,

the host identification should help. Ph. lacerum appears typically  on needels of conifers (mainly Pinus) but is also reported on postharverst pest on Rosaceae as apples and pears.

@Zotto: do you know of records of Ph. lacerum on Ilex as well?

I took this from the article you indicated. Did I read something wrong?
