Xylaria ? species
Pauline. Penna, 18-12-2017 12:24
Bonjour tous

These tiny Xylaria were found on a fallen branch of Prunus spinosa at the base of a hedge in Cornwall, UK.

Stromata 3-4 mm ,upright, many mucronate, crust 60microns thick. Stalks with sparse hairs.
Perithecia subglobose 500 microns wide. Ostioles papillate.
Asci 215-230 x 6 microns. Ascal apparatus urn shaped 5 x 3.
Ascospores 18-20 x 5-7 microns ellipsoidal not equilateral, germ slit nearly full length. Some asci 4 spored.

Anamorph present 2-3 mm with hairy stalk.

As the anamorph was present I thought it would be X. hypoxylon but the spores are too big.
Could it be X. arbuscular var. plenofissura ?
Help please.

Re : Xylaria ? species
Dear Pauline,
your Xylaria could be either X. arbuscula var. plenofissura or X. xylarioides, which are very close. The small size is suggestive of the latter. Did you see a basal appendage on ascospores?
If you have enough material to share it, I would gladly study it to be perhaps more conclusive.
Best wishes,
Jacques

Re : Xylaria ? species
Hello Jacques
Thank you for responding to my post. I didn't look for appendages on the spores, should I do this with Indian Ink ?
I would be very happy to send you some stroma,  there were quite a lot on the log.
Please let me know your address.
Best wishes
Pauline

Re : Xylaria ? species
the appendage is slighly refractive and can be seen in water. It stains light blue in blue ink and India ink is also a good option.
Thanks for sending the fungus, after gentle air-drying, to this postal address:

Please wrap it in paper when it is dry, avoiding plastic or aluminium sheet.

Re : Xylaria ? species
Hello Jacques

I have looked at spores in Indian ink as I have no blue and can see no appendage. The ends of the spores do appear darker and thicker , which I hope shows on this image.

Dried material on the way to you shortly.

Many thanks
Pauline
