Orange Nectria-like asco on wood
Ethan Crenson, 04-03-2017 17:25
On bare wood in Bronx, New York, US.  There were also Stereum sp. on the same wood.  The perithecia are orange and seated in a dense, cottony subiculum.  Purple in KOH.  They were mostly devoid of spores that I could detect.  However, there were present a number of brown (a few hyaline) large (15-17um by 7-8um), 1-septate spores. Some of these spores almost look as if they have the annellations of a conidiospore. Since I am quite new to this I am not sure if I have anything that can aid in identificataion of this asco, so I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Re : Orange Nectria-like asco on wood
Hi Ethan,
Maybe immature Hypomyces aurantius? The nice keys that were available on the USDA website for hypocrealean fungi are no longer available.  Looking at Gary Samuel's Fungicolous fungi of the mid-atlantic states book it seems like H. aurantius might be a good fit. As for the septate spores they may be the anamorphic state of the fungus, though yours look different than what Samuels shows for that species.  I will send you a PDF of the book.  Best wishes - Jason

Hi Jason,

Can you send the PDF of the book of Samuels et al. to me too? That would be very helpful.

Best regards, Eduard

Hi, I sent it to the email address: info[@]cultivospima.com (brackets to nullify link to your email address).  Please send me a new email address if this is not correct.  Otherwise, it was a large file and might take a few seconds to download, or maybe it is in your spam?  Best - Jason
