Black Asco Embedded in Stem of Urtica dioica
Peter Thompson, 13-09-2016 13:36
Hello Everyone,

I have found groups of a black ascomycete immersed beneath the epidermis of a dead stem of Urtica dioica. They have short ostioles which protrude just above the surface of the host.

The hyaline spores measure between 17.0 to 18.75 x 3.75 to 5um. They have between one and six guttules and the surface shows longitudinal striations. Apparantly no septa.

The 8-spored asci are narrow, with spores in one line. The ascus tips do not react to Melzers.

I have attached a photo of the fruit bodies, including one centre left with the host broken away. Also, photos of the spores and an ascus tip in water and in Melzers.

I do not know a suitable genus, let alone species with these characteristics.

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions?

Thank You,
With Best Wishes,
Peter.
