On dead leaves of Laurus nobilis
Carmel Sammut, 18-11-2015 17:59
Found on dead leaves of Laurus nobilis last week, in a shaded area.
It appears to be a conidial form with unusual spores which I cannot identify using Hanlins's guide or any of my books. No asci or paraphyses seen.

Ascoma 450-650µm diameter
'Spores' triseptate some with 2 long cilia at both ends, sometimes with only 1.
Size 23-24 x 3-3.5µm, cilia up to 10µm in length.

Any help would be appreciated.

The only species listed on Laurus by Saccardo is an Ectostoma laurii but I cannot find any data on this species.

This is Coelomycete. I think Discosia artocreas (Tode) Fr.

Re : On dead leaves of Laurus nobilis
Alex is surely correct in the genus, but there are other Discosia spp. known to occur on Laurus leaves. This thread might be of some help:

If you would like I could send you quite a bit of literature on the microfungi found on Laurus leaves (a very interesting micro-habitat)  . . . . .

best wishes
Chris

Re : On dead leaves of Laurus nobilis
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the link - a very useful thread. The publication by Vanev (1996) re Discosia in the Mediterranean lists D. laurina as growing on Laurus - I will take a closer look at more literature first.

Thank you also for your offer of literature on Laurus which I will gladly accept.

Thanks again
