Melanomma-like on Salix
Gernot Friebes,

I'm not sure where to place this fungus which I found last week on a branch of Salix ca. 1.5 m above the ground. Hopefully I'm not just missing something obvious here! The ascospores are smooth, thin-walled, light brown, 4-septate with the second cell from the top being the broadest, measuring 21.6–23.2 x 8,3–9,0 µm. No sheath observed. Asci are bitunicate, 8-spored, with ascospores being arranged somewhat uni- to bi-seriately. Hamathecium filaments are up to 4.6 µm wide. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thank you and best wishes,
Gernot

hi gernot,
the spores are long. perhaps you have to search in genus thyridaria?

Re : Melanomma-like on Salix
Hi all,
no, Thyridaria fbs are always embedded +/- into host surface (or into a valsoid stroma) and there are furthermore only a few species with spores >20µm. I think this is a Melanomma, did you check Holm?

Re : Melanomma-like on Salix
Hi Dirk & Björn,
thanks for your suggestions! I did check Holm but to no avail. However, I found a species in Mathiassen (1989) that fits relatively well: Leptosphaeria hendersoniae (now Plenodomus hendersoniae). Mathiassen even mentions that some collections of this species "have been wrongly identified as Melanomma pulvis-pyrius".
The ascospores are a bit longer in Mathiassen (20.5–27(30) x 7–9.5 µm, mean 24.6 x 7.9 µm) so I will check that again but I'm fairly certain that this is a good track.
Best wishes,
Gernot

Re : Melanomma-like on Salix
Yes, indeed the species has a leptosphaerioid appearance. I wonder about the habitat, perhaps Plenodomus is a good name for it.
