I found this in a semitropical area of Queretaro, at about 800 meters elevation. Any idea what it is?I have the collection here but have not scoped it yet.

That looks very interesting! It is a Pyronemataceae, but I do not remember any species with such hairy apothecia in combination with so long, deeply buried stipes. Maybe close to Humaria or Tricharina? Would be interested in seeing the spores and the attachment of the hairs.

this looks close to a cookeina-species. perhaps its geodina guanacastensis or something close. there is a publication of dennis in mycologia 57 ...
would be very interesting to see the spores.

Would be very interesting to see not only the spores but also the asci and hairs - and I would very much like to get a piece for study and for DNA of multiple genes to include in the phylogenies for all of Pezizomycetes. We do not have it.

It looks very much like the collections of Geodina guanacastensis we have (herbarium LIP) from the Caribbean. DNA results (not published yet) confirm that it is a distinct lineage within the Sarcoscyphaceae, not far from Cookeina.

We have 3 ITS sequences, from Guadeloupe and Martinique, generated last year by Jean-Michel for a preliminary account of our Caribbean collections of Pezizales. We aimed to present these data at the Bangkok congress last summer, but we finally could not attend the congress. We will certainly generate 28S this year from the same collections (as well as Cookeina, which reveal some interesting diversity inside well-known species). If you have suggestions of other genes to explore, we will be pleased to discuss about that!

Karen, our ITS seq are 576 - 577 bp long for Geodina, generated with ITS1F/ITS4.

I am interested in some higher level systematic work (just filling in genera). I have not heard of recent finds of this genus before. So it is very nice to have these reports and perhaps it is more common (but hiding in herbaria or other places).

I think we can only fear positive interactions Karen ;-) We are indeed very glad to have such a nice species within our Caribbean samples, I saw that no sequence of it was public yet and this is why we had the project of a communication - which will hopefully become a paper this year. ITS does not give a robust support to the position of Geodina inside the Cookeina-Sarcoscypha clade, for which we want another gene. But our data and our samples are at your disposal (as always) if you need them for your own projects.

For what it is worth (I know this conversation was four years ago), a recent paper has been published separating Geodina and Wynnea into a new family (Wynneaceae). It should be free to access here: doi.org/10.3114/fuse.2020.05.08. It would be interesting to see if your ITS sequences match the published sequences.
