No Idea what this is ....can anyone help
Caroline Hobart, 17-01-2014 22:57

Hi

I hope someone can help with this collection. It was found today 17/01/2014 in Nottinghamshire UK in mixed woodland.  Growing on a root amongst the soil litter. Very small, a number of fruitbodies growing together. Apologies for the quality of macro photos.

Apothecium approx 2.5 mm across when rehydrated, stipe length about 3.5mm to attachment. Appearing wrinkled or veined. Edge of cup Serrated or fimbriate. Stipe attachment central, stipe darker than cap. Appearing approx three cells thick Texture prismatica , with paraphyses or hairs on surface amongst asci.

Spores approx 10 x 5.2 µ  amyloid (Melzers) with two drops asymentrical, ellipsoid with pointed ends

Ascus tips simple, not appearing to have crosiers at base, appearing thick walled?

Paraphyses or hairs with brown granular inclusion. These forked near base. more images in PDF.

Hi Carol

this is great, it must be Calyptellopsis reticulata. Piotr Perz once had it and made photos like in the attach.

We were not sure whether the reticulate appearance of the hymenium is a matter of senescence.  I actually know very similar populations without the reticulum or perforations. Typically this grows on rootlets. I have it in my folder Helotiaceae, subfolder Calyptellopsis - Pithyella. It is the type species of the former genus.

Thank you Zotto.
It would appear that it is not on the UK list. I must dry the small collection I have and send it to Kew there is no material there.

It is very beautiful!
Very best wishes and thanks again for your help.
Carol
