Hypoxylon?
Björn Wergen, 19-11-2013 17:54
Björn WergenHi there,

in Austria, my friend has found an interesting collection of a hypoxyloid species, from which I do not know what it is. Perithecia are about 0,6-0,9mm and are embedded in a black stroma, growing in rows on dead deciduous wood surface. Looking at the non-ostiolate perithecia, I first thought about Creosphaeria sassafras, but spores do not fit this species.

In KOH, it has no reaction. Asci Lugol +, spores have a conspicuous germ slit.

Any idea?

All the best,
björn

Re : Hypoxylon?
Hi Bjorn,
not a Hypoxylon because of the lack of coloured granules and perithecia deeply immersed beneath surface.
It is a Lopadostoma, close to L. gastrinum based on the pale entostroma and its situation often superficial on dead wood but ascospores average a bit larger than reported for this species. Is the germ slit on one side or circumferential? The host is also important to know.
Cheers,
Jacques

Re : Hypoxylon?
Hi Jacques,

yes I had lots of doubts about my determination as Hypoxylon, but I did not find any other genus which it can belong to...

The germ slit is only on one side and the host should be Robinia.
