Lasionectria on lichen
Stip Helleman,
07-10-2013 00:38

last friday I collected a piece of a Parmelia-like lichen on bark that looked infected, under the dissecting microscope I found orange hairy perithecia. My best guess is Lasionectria, but lacking any literature about it I am stucked here.
The mature Perithecia are 120 - 150 mu big, KOH negative spores 1 septate 18,5-21,5 x 3,5 no striation is seen, hairs are with thick glassy walls up to 33 x 9,2
Any help is welcome,
T.I.A.
Stip

Re : Lasionectria on lichen
I do not know what is your specimen, there is no Lasionectria known on Lichen. It would be useful to see a section through ascomatal wall to be sure that is the genus Lasionectria.

Christian

Re : Lasionectria on lichen
Dear Stip, Please send some material to Benjamin Stielow at CBS for isolation in culture. Such interesting fungi must be cultured and analysed with molecular methods. Best wishes Walter

Re : Lasionectria on lichen
It's probably the one called Trichonectria rubefaciens.

Did you compare Trichonectria rubefaciens? I have images of a collection of Piotr: Trichonectria rubefaciens, PP20080720-003, 010.jpg

Re : Lasionectria on lichen
Thanks to all,
Christian, even for me this is too small to make a section freehand.
it seems to be Trichonectria rubefaciens indeed from pictures, although I could not find a description of the species yet.
Walter, could you send me the e-mail adress of Benjamin Stielow so I can can contact him about it, there seems to be no sequence of this species in Genbank.
Best wishes,
Stip

Re : Lasionectria on lichen
Het is B.Stielow@cbs.knaw.nl
He will probably forward the material to Pedro Crous or Lorenzo or other interested people.
