Sporormia(Sporormiella) ulmicola
Ralf Dahlheuser, 08-02-2013 21:58
Ralf DahlheuserHi.

My name is Ralf Dahlheuser from Germany.
I have been collecting for two years and would like today for the first time ask a question.

I found this Sporormiella on wood (Salix) in an insect feeding gear, but it can not be determined reliably. The coprophilen types that I know will be eliminated. There is evidence of Sporormia (Sporormiella) ulmicola, but I'm not sure. Can anyone help?

Thank you very much.

Dear Ralf,

This looks like Preussia (Sporormiella) minima to me.  The cylindrical ascus, spore size and small bend in the germ slit seem exactly right.  Preussia minima has been isolated many places other than dung, such as being an endophyte in woody plants.

Re : Sporormia(Sporormiella) ulmicola
Hi Dave,

Thank you for your comment. S. minima was my first thought. But the spore form, and the lobate stalk leaves me doubt. In addition, the spores of this type are not easily separable.
S. minima is one of the most common species in my area, and I can compare this one with many finds. That does not really fit.

Thanks anyway.

Update:

Dave, do you have informations about literature of Sporormiella, Sporormia or Preussia on wood ?

Hi Ralf,

The paper by Ahmed & Cain (Can. J. Bot. 50:419-477. 1971) list several species of Sporormiella on wood.  I don't think they examined any of these and they provided no descriptions.  It would be necessary to go back to the original papers in many cases.  If you don't have the Ahmed & Cain paper I can send it to you.

Hi Dave,

I have the paper by Ahmed & Cain (1971). But there I can not find anything suitable.
Sporormiella/Sporormia on wood are listed, but theres no description.

I look for these descriptions.

It will be difficult, i think. :-)
