Dothideomycete on Acer sp
Björn Wergen, 24-09-2012 13:05
Björn WergenHello,

I have found this small pyrenomycete on dead attached Acer sp twigs with very small 0,08-0,14mm broad perithecia singly embedded into the surface of the bark. I had never seen this one, microscopically it reminds me on Cryptosporella species but these spores have a central septation and are over 70µm long.

Is this really bitunicate? I think it is unitunicate and has relations to Diaporthales. But perhaps someone has another idea for it.

regards,
björn

Hi Björn,
Did you use red congo ? It's very useful with Diaporthales to see apical apparatus.

Re : Dothideomycete on Acer sp
this is possibly an undescribed species of Cresporhaphis (currently in Trichosphaeriaceae). C. macrospora has similarly large ascospores, but they have 1-3 septa and the fungus occurs on Quercus. Sure about Acer?
Cheers,
Walter

Hello Walter, hi Alain,

I am sure with Acer. I just do not know if it is definitely A. maximoviczianum, but it is for sure Acer.

Thanks for your opinion, Alain. I will try Congo tomorrow. Today I had Coronophora gregaria (this on has been shown on this forum 2 years ago) and Splanchospora ampullacea.

Re : Dothideomycete on Acer sp
Hello All:

I wonder if this could be Leiosphaerella falcata Barr (Bigelow & Barr, 1968. Contribution to the Fungus Flora of Northeastern North America IV. Rhodora 68:175-191). She cited collections on Acer spicatum and A. pensylvanicum. She also mentioned an amyloid reaction in the ascus apex and suggested that it might be included in the Amphisphaeriaceae.

I have found if once in PEI on Acer spicatum. Your collection may be one of the first reports from Europe.

Hope this helps.

Hi Adrian,

I will check amyloid reaction today. I will make some more photos of it too.

See what happened with apical apparatus in iodine ;)

Re : Dothideomycete on Acer sp
Hello Bjorn:
It looks very much like my collection. I would quite interested in your collection data since I've been looking and not found it again.

When and where did you collect it?
Were the twigs still attached to the tree? Acer spicatum is a shrubby maple here in PEI. Is Acer sp you looked at a shrubby maple as well?
Were the areas always bleached where the ascomata were found?

I'm sorry I don't have the Bigelow & Barr article online but I hope you find it. It gives a very good description.

Best Adrian

Congratulations to Björn for finding this remarkable fungus on the exotic maple and to Adrian for its identification!
