Scopinella? from Chile
Pablo Sandoval, 19-09-2012 21:56
Pablo SandovalEstimados

Saludos cordiales

Dear Pablo,

It is difficult to confirm your identification of Scopinella solani without some further information.  How many spores are there in each ascus?  It looks like two in your photo.  Are the ascospores shorter than 7µm?

Some species of Scopinella, such as S. sphaerophila and S.gallicola are very host-specific mycoparasites while others, such as S. solani seem to be on dead plant material.  Is it possible that the ones you find on Nothofagus are actually growing on another fungus?  What are the round structures with the perithecia on them?

Dave

Saludos

Dear Pablo,

That is a very interesting species!

No species of Scopinella is known to be a plant parasite or to have a stroma.  It seems very possible to me that the stroma is caused by another species of fungi.  If so, then your species would be similar to S. sphaerophila, including the asci with two spores.  But then, what is the host fungus?

Perhaps another person on this forum can comment on the stromata.  I am not familiar with the fungi on Nothofagus and may have overlooked something obvious.

Dave

In the attachment You have the description of Scopinella solani by...David Malloch ! I known other three works about Scopinella:

(1)Malloch D. 1976. Scopinella sphaerophila. Fungi Canadenses 83 [I have the PDF]
(2) Stchigel A. M. et al. 2006. Two new ascomycetes from rainforest litter in Costa Rica. Mycologia 98 (5): 815-820 [I have the PDF]
(3) Tsuneda A, Hiratsuka Y. 1981. Scopinella gallicola, a new species from rust galls of Endocronartium harknesii on Pinus contorta. Can J Bot 59:1192–1195 [not in my library]
I have also the works by Léveille where the name Scopinella is published for the first time.

Re : Scopinella? from Chile
