Discomycete on Quercus rubra branches
Alex Akulov, 14-08-2012 19:19
Alex AkulovDear Friends
Can you help me with identification of discomycete sample from Q. rubra branches?
When I collect it, I was sure that it is Pezicula sp., but I meet smaller and distinctly verrucose spores.

Grateful before,
Alex

Hi Alex

did you test with Lugol?  I suppose it is a Pezicula which should show a deep red apical ring.  Don't use Melzer 'cause that would resulat in no reaction at all.

Sligthly roseous tips can be considered in several asci, but it is not deep red.

Maybe you need to apply more of your solution.  You are sure it does not contain chloralhydrate?

Re : Discomycete on Quercus rubra branches
Can it be immature Pezicula cinnamomea?

I used pure Lugol.

Yes, I suppose, but I would rather say dead instead of immature. The asci have their deep red apical ring already very early during development, when the spores are still not present.

Your Lugol should look honey-brown in the bottle, if yellow you need to add a few iodine crystals. But the pure red reaction in Pezicula (type rr) is shown with yellow Lugol also.

I try to prepare fresh Lugol solution tomorrow and to make photo again.

Thank you for advise!
Really, I was able to see the redish color only in the very immature asci, where spores has only begun to take shape.
