Ascomycete on Juniperus communis old leaves
Enrique Rubio, 04-08-2009 13:32
Enrique RubioHi to all:
I need some help for determinate this fungus that forms clearly erumpent and sessile ascomata up to 0.8 mm of diameter on Juniperus communis old leaves at 1700 m of altitude.
The hymenium is whitish-greyish or greyish. The apothecial rims are pilose and white. Ectal excipulum is brownish and fully covered by crystalline masses.

Îs apparently a Hysterostegiella. Could you please send me the images in higher resolution?

Re:Ascomycete on Juniperus communis old leaves
I tried Hein's key, and I arrive at Hysterostegiella, but not at a species. It seems close to H. dumeti and lauri, but spores are wider, and dumeti has long excretions on the hairs.

Possibly a new species.

From the substrate Sarcotrochila would be a choice, but there the paraphyses are not lanceolate and the spores much larger and guttulate.

Re:Ascomycete on Juniperus communis old leaves
Dear Enrique

you are right in your mail to me, this seems to be Hysterostegiella juniperina (E. Müll.) Schmid-Heckel, Pilze in den Berchtesgadener Alpen, Nationalpark Berchtesgaden Forschungsberichte (Regensberg): 27 (1988).

I did not have this species in my database. The description in Müller as Psilachnum j. in Sydowia 1968 is quite inadequate, spore width is with 1-2 µm to narrow but too inexact and no spore drawing supplied, no mntion of the apo-lid. Schmid does not redescribe the fungus.

Zotto

Re:Ascomycete on Juniperus communis old leaves
see the description of Holm & Holm (1977:22) under Stegopeziza juniperina [= Hysterogiella juniperina (E. Müll.) Schmid-Heckel]. The spores are greater (6-8 x 1,5-2 µm) but the other features well agree with your description.
Best, Guy

Re:Ascomycete on Juniperus communis old leaves

Michel
