I collected a Trichopezizella rubroguttata (with croziers) on wet culms of Filipendula. The strange thing about it is that it has two kinds of asci and two kinds of spores.

When thinking about that I found the intrahymenial parasite Helicogonium about which I knew nothing beforehand. I have observed no ascoconidia and no anamorphs. The asci are 30.0 - 33.8 × 6.1 - 7.20 and spores in asci are on avg. 7.8 × 2.0 µm.

Am I on the right track - is this a Helicogonium? If so, does it have a name? I am aware of only one old Helicogonium collection from Finland, collected in 1851.

Hello,

the asci are too short and there are no lanceolate paraphyses. Isn't it possible, that one of those small apothecia of Olla cf millepunctata got mixed into your Trichopezizella preparate?

The brown cells look strange for an Olla. But these asci were amyloid, were they? Helicogonium has inamyloid asci with more rounded apex.

But there's this variety with dark maroon excipulum cells - Olla scrupulosa var. obscura. Do you consider it to belong to Olla or elsewhere?

I cannot remember this var. obscura description, but you are right, in HB 1671 I sketched a brown exciple and was thinking that associated smaller hyaline apos (1670) were another species. But that was in 1977.... A similar sample with brown cells but small apos was HB 6068c which I considered the same as 1671. These brown-celled populations appear to be rarer than the hyaline ones.

You are right, I had a mixed preparation. The small light colored apos are typical Olla millepunctatata. However, on the small dark ones I can't find any refractive/dextrinoid hairs, so it cannot be an Olla.

The asci are now 31-44 × 5.5-7.3 and the spores 7.9-8.7 × 1.9-2.6. Perhaps something around Pyrenopeziza atrata?
