Hello, I found Trochila ilicina on Ilex aquifoliu

pyrenomycete on dead parts of foliose liverwort from Norway
Lothar Krieglsteiner, 18-08-2025 15:07
Lothar Krieglsteiner.. 20.7.25, in subarctic habital.
The liverwort is introduced here, unfortunately without answer:

https://nafoku.de/forum/202507_0118_0001.htm
https://nafoku.de/forum/202507_0118_0002.htm
https://nafoku.de/forum/202507_0118_0003.htm

The ascus porus is strikingly blue in Baral and stays so - in Melzer (after KOH) it is reacting blue first also but hen the color is vanishing rapidly (the chloral hydrate is likely arriving later than the iodine and supresses the freaction then).
The spores are longitudinally and transversely septate, they vary strongly in size between 25-40/9-14 µm.

Who can provide me with a hint?
The bluing porus might point to Xylariales (?).

Yours, Lothar

Hi Lothar,

I think it is a Protothelenella species. Fits very well.

All the best,
George

Hi George,
thank you very much for your determination of the genus. As I quickly see, there are 11 species (I looked in the Index of Fungi). I will see if I can obtain literature to get still closer.
Yours, Lothar

Re : pyrenomycete on dead parts of foliose liverwort from Norway
Today I had the time to look up this in the key of Martin Westberg (Achariana).
Best seems to fit Protothelenella sphinctrinoides.
The spores are a little bit smaller than given, but longer and above all wider than the other possible species (with superficial growth, roundish ascomata, growth on mosses, muriform spores).
The liverwort was told me to be a Cephalozia spec. in meantime.
