Trouvé aujourd'hui sur un talus thermophile à Stoumont (Ardenne belge). Encore une de ces curiosités pour lesquelles je manque certainement de documentation. Vue de terrain: les feuilles jaunissent et se nécrosent; à la face inférieure des feuilles, des cléistothécies noires (dont certaines contenant l'anamorphe, stade phoma) apparaissent.

Cléistothécies noires aplaties, immergées puis érompantes, se déchirant, laissant apparaître l'hyménium hyalin. Taille: environ 1-2 mm (l'échelle est donnée par le sommet d'une feuille de Galium mollugo); en colonies.
Asques octosporés, p.ex. 49-57 x 5-7 µ, IKI bleu; il est difficile de voir s'il y a des croziers car la fructification est difficile à séparer du substrat. Spores hyalines, guttulées, non septées, très variables en taille et forme, 10-12 x 2.2-3.5 µ, parfois plus petites ( 6 x 1.5: avortées?). Paraphyses cylindriques, hyalines, x 2µ d'épaisseur, dépassant un peu les asques, et comme engluées dans une sorte de gel (un peu comme chez les Orbilia, mais avec un sommet non renflé).
Anamorphe formés de pycnides semblables aux cléistothécies, remplies de conidies hyalines 4-5 x 1-1.5 µ.

I think the "cleistothecia" are apothecia and open when moistened. All seems to fit to Leptotrochila verrucosa, see my drawing on DVD (HB 3537).

Since you are looking at fungi on Galium, we are seeking Mazzantia galii (Fr.) Mont., type of the genus Mazzantia in the Diaporthales. This fungus produces a small, black stroma, 1-2 mm long, with immersed perithecia that become erumpent on the overwintered stalks. The ascospores are also non-septate. If you see such a fungus, we would love to try to culture it.

Well, it's reported on G. aparine as well as Galium sp.

I saw your message, so today I search and found recolt of Mazzantia galii . Do you want a piece of this recolt ? I think it's Mazzantia galii, I will work it again to verify. I observed appendages on a few ascospores. Margaret Barr did'nt mention them. is it possible ?
Galium aparine is an interesting host. I also found, Leptosphaeria galiorum and L.scitula, Hydopisphaera arenula .
