Scutellinia nigrohirtula complex 090724
Miguel Ángel Ribes, 19-07-2024 11:08
Miguel Ãngel RibesGood morning

This Scutellinia from July 9 grew at 1,400 m in Santa Mª de la Alameda (Madrid) among mud and plant debris.

Ascospores with a Q <1.8, with ornamentation in the form of small tubercles measuring 1-1.3 x 0.5-0.7 microns (width x height), without forming reticulum or ridges.

Hairs of the margin of 1000 microns (800-1200), all with a simple base, not even one with a bifurcated base, much larger than the hairs at the base, which maintain the same morphology. The ornamentation could be similar to S. subhirtella, but this one has hairs with a bi-trifurcate base.

Live spore measurements in water: (20.5) 21.4 - 23.1 (23.6) × (13.2) 13.5 - 14.5 (15.1) µm; Q = 1.5 - 1.7 (1.8) ; N = 52; Me = 22.2 × 14 µm; Qe = 1.6
Hairs in water: (831.3) 843.9 - 1095.6 (1258.9) × (19.7) 23.8 - 32 .5 (38.9) µm; N = 24; Me = 1024.4 × 28.4

With Beñats's key I arrive to S. nigrohirtula, but I have doubts about S. subhirtella.

Thanks in advance.

Hairs too long for nigrohirtula...

Interesting collection. Also the ornamentation is too high for nigrohirtula, IMO. Can you try to observe the hair base from inside? Squash mount, perhaps in KOH, flat section turned with the hair downward. It's rather unusual for such a long hairs not to have at least 2 roots.

There is S. aff. patagonica documented from Korea (doi: 10.1127/0029-5035/2013/0120) which has similar ornamentation, Q, hair length, somewhat smaller spores (attached screenshot).
