Hymenoscyphus? on branch of Aesculus - Denmark
Karen Poulsen, 13-04-2024 12:11
Hi

I found these under loose bark on a fallen branch.

Apothecia up to 3/4 mm diam, short-stalked, white to cream-coloured, some turning pale flesh-coloured. Paraphyses slightly longer than asci, tending to stick together slightly, narrowly cylindrical with expanded apex, 2-3 µm wide. In lugol with red circular spots in the upper part. The same colour you see in the excipulum. Asci J+ in apex, 8-spored, 110-130 µm x 10-12 µm. Spores spindle-shaped, perhaps more pointed at one end. With drops, (17.5)19-24(24.7)x 5-6 µm.

Best regards,

Karen P.

Although white this should be Allophylaria macrospra. What you could check: The living paraphyses should contain elongated VBs (in water, you have VBs in the living excipular cells), and the asci must arise from simple septa.

Thank you for great help! I have found it before on another tree, Populus, in the same area, so should have recognized it.

The material is from February and dried, so can't check living paraphyses.

Regards,

Karen P.
