Polydesmia sp. ?
Simon Gurtner, 31-01-2024 22:28
Simon GurtnerGood evening,

Here is a species I found on the stroma of an undetermined Pyrenomycete, on the inside of scales of a pine cone.

Apothecia 0.1 - 0.35 mm, gregarious, initially turbinate and whitish, then developed into a small disc and yellowish in colour. Short stalked, with few, relatively large anchor hyphae.

Ectal excipulum textura prismatica, horizontally orientated.

Asci 8 sp., clavate with hooks, inoperculate, biseriate and IKI+. n7 = (62) 69.31 (86.5) x (9.5) 10.14 (10.8)

Spores hyaline. Fusoid, inequilateral to allantoid. Mature spores with three septa and 4 oil drops. N 36= (16) 21.99 (28) x (3) 3.52 (4.1).
Many spores are peculiarly deformed (frost damage?)

Paraphyses hyaline, slender, cylindrical, partly forked and slightly twisted in the upper part. 1.5 - 2.5 my wide, with 2-3 septa.

I think of Polydesmia. P. turbinata has similarities, but has been described on stroma on Eucalyptus fruit capsules.
Maybe I am completely wrong.

Many thanks for your support

Simon

Re : Polydesmia sp. ?
Good morning

it would be better to use oil immersion, this looks like 400x.

My guess is Pseudhelotium sordidulum (= P. vernale), with typically fusoid spores of that size.

I have it in my Hyaloscyphaceae folder.

At the margin are short septate hairs with sometimes yellow-brown granular exudate.

Polydesmia has apically irregularly branched paraphyses.
