Once again a small black ascomycete? update Durella_connivens
Dirk Gerstner, 04-12-2023 19:29
Hello everyone,

I found the following small black Asco, about 300 to 700ym in size, on a beech branch about 30mm thick without bark. At a height of about 2m on the trunk.
At first I thought again of a lichenized Asco, but with negative Lugol reaction of the Asci I am unsure.
Asci with hook.
Hardly any free spores found.
Spores around 30 x 5 ym
Where can I look further or who knows the species?

Many thanks for your support and opinions

Best regards

Dirk

Re : Once again a small black ascomycete?
Hello Dirk,
surely more competent people will still answer you. My suggestion would be the genus Durella. With the old key of Zotto I come to D. connivens. Your collection seems to be not fully ripe - couldn`t you observe more free spores, and see if they are septate (in the picture it loosk as if they were already in the ascus ..?). The excipulum looks Durella-like to me.
Yours, Lohtar

Re : Once again a small black ascomycete?
Hello Lothar,

Thank you very much for your quick reply.
The genus and species you suggested fit quite well.
I compared my photos with Zotto's photos in his "Durella folder".
D. connivens is already a good match.

I still have the branch and am trying to find free septate spores.
It will probably take a while yet.

update, the spores are still not quite ripe but you can already see between 5 and 7 septa. The spore dimensions have also changed. approx. 43-48 x 4.8-6.3 ym.

Best regards
Dirk
