bitunicate, staining substrate purple - Leptosphaeria purpurea?
Lothar Krieglsteiner, 23-11-2023 09:46
Lothar Krieglsteiner.. found 19.11.23 in the Schwäbische Alb, Germany, on old stems of Sambucus ebulus lying on the ground.
The spores are about 24-30(34)/4-5,5(6,5) µm large, and (3)-5-septate, constricted at the septa, at first hyaline, but I found older spores stained dark (blackish).
As I know there are other ascomycetes staining the substrate, I would appreciate your opinion.
Yours, Lothar

Hello Angelo,
thank you for your interesting suggestion that I will follow and later response.
I once before had a species of this genus:
http://www.ascofrance.fr/search_forum/64573
It was growing submersely on wood, so had a very different ecology. But ...
Tahnka again and best regards,
Lothar

Hi Lothar,

I guess you know that this was on wood and not herbaceous, but you mentioned stems, so just checking with Lophiostoma origani var. rubidum, normally only on Epilobium and other plants but pink stains and appears immersed through the substarte, spores close etc., and has variable septa. Normally has colourless appendages. Also species from Herpotrichia get close, but again mostly herbaceous.  Not much help perhaps. Wood is wood!

Hi Tony,
thank you very much for your proposals - I will look at them and maybe they will prove to be valuable. Anniculicula grows on wood, typically, and that was what made me hesitate at once. Sambucus ebulus is not woody (in opposite to other species of the genus) and so your proposal of Lophiostoma could be good. I will check and write again.
Yours, Lothar
