Hi my friendsI'd like to know your opinion on this peculiar fungus.
Perithecia superficial, gregarious, growing on branches of Ficus carica still attached to the tree but close to the ground, but away from water, apparently not growing on pyrenomycetes or other fungi. Pyriform, 200-400 µm high, collapsing vertically when dry, blackish, ostiolate, densely hirsute due to subhyaline or light brown hairs with acute apex, multiseptate, (100-)165(-225) x (10-)11(-12) µm with thick walls 1.5-3.0 µm. Asci fusoid (72-)80(-102) x (14-)17(-20) µm, 8-spored, without an apical apparatus or subapical globule visible. Ascospores ellipsoidal (18.0-)20.0(-22.5) x (7.0-)7.5(-8.0) µm; Q = (2.3-)2.7(-3.0), with obtuse poles only slightly attenuate; hyaline, yellowish at maturity, constricted to a median transverse septum, ornamented by conspicuous warts up to 1 µm high surrounded by a thick, usually persistent episporium.
The fungos shares characters of Echinosphaeria and Helminthosphaeria. It seems close to Echinosphaeria incondita A.E. Bell & Mahoney, CBS Biodiversity Series 15: 79 (2016) with aquatic ecology, with up to 3 septa more fusiform larger ascospores 25-31 x 6-8, not constricted and asci vith an apical apparatus.

As usual, I would be happy to sequence it. It probably is not that significant without DNA sequence data and will remain ambiguous.

Some of the ascomata in the upper left photo look collabent. I do not know of any Helminthosphaeriaceae that are collabent. Probably a Coronophorales.

The description of Echinosphaeria incondita refers to a Spanish collection on Olea by J.J. Priou. I would like to know if it has similar characters to this one on Ficus.
I will try to sequence it, but I need specimens in better condition not contaminated by the dematiaceous fungus that invaded all the colonies.

I have already looked up the word collabent. Yes, as I said in my description, the perithecia collapse vertically very easily.

Yes, as you said, it certainly looks more like nectriaceous than helminthosphaeriaceous.

Dan and Anne are dear friends of mine, but they never sequenced their specimens, even the TYPE specimens. So, just because they call it a Helminthosphaeria does not mean it is one. Sequencing this collection would help us to know which order it belongs in.

Good luck. Very few members of Helminthosphaeriaceae and Coronophorales grow in culture so do not be disappointed.
