Black, erumpent ascomata on alpine Salix
Edvin Johannesen, 02-08-2022 21:46
Edvin JohannesenThese dark, erumpent, somewhat flaky apothecia, 1-3 mm in diameter when dry, were growing on thin twigs of Salix at 1100 m alt. in Western Norway mid-June. They never opened, even after rehydration. Dark outer tissue layer (textura intricata/oblita) and a thicker, whitish middle layer. Asci with croziers, IKI-. I have not seen mature ascospores, but I think I saw small spherical spores (conidia or secondary ascospores) in a previous mount. Paraphyses filiform, extending far beyond the asci. Asci ca. 60-70 micr. long.

I am pretty sure I have seen this before, but I am not able to recall what it is.  Any suggestions?

(I have used phase contrast on three images in order to vizualise the ascus base.)

Thanks.

Looks like Godronia cf. fuliginosa, the teleomorph.

No, Thomas - no pigments observed (I assume you have purplish pigments in mind).

Thanks, Peter - that looks like a good suggestion. The asci are too small and IKI-, but I suspect they are simply immature (no ascospores seen).
