Ascomycete with brown septate spores
Jennifer Fiorentino, 06-06-2022 10:34
When examining the apothecia of an arthonoid lichen growing on the bark of an unrecorded tree from the Maltese Islands (Mediterranean) I came across asci which did not belong to Arthonia. These had large 1- and 3- septate brown spores 46-55 x 14-17um with what looked like a perispore unless I am being fooled and that is still part of the spore wall. What could this asco be? Could it be a lichenicolous fungus or did I section the ascomatum of a saprophytic fungus which happened to be growing on the bark? Thanks.

Re : Ascomycete with brown septate spores
Hi Jennifer
What is the reproductive structure of this fungus?
Is it lireliform? A perithecium? Do you think that this new fungi is also a fungus belonging to the Order Arthoniales? Is the apex ascal typical of Arthoniales?

Re : Ascomycete with brown septate spores
Hello Marta. I had actually taken a section of an apothecium of an Arthonia and found these asci. In fact I am suspecting this fungus could be a lichenicolous one but am not ruling out that I might have sectioned an apothecium of a saprobic asco. The brown septate spores cannot belong to an Arthonia. Size, shape and colour are different.
