Albotricha?
Stefan Jakobsson, 11-06-2021 23:14
On an old Typha latifolia on wet ground there were several kinds of small stipitate apothecia. One of them has a cream coloured disk, 350 µm wide. The spores are 12.3-14.1 × 1.9-2.4, almost without visible content. The hairs are tapering but with the apex easily collapsing and the ornamentation is of fairly regular small granules, very low towards the apex. Croziers missing. All measurements match Albotricha acutipila nicely, but I have never seen this kind of granulation on A. acutipila where I am used to seeing amorphous lumps. And Typha is not a grass.

I don't quite know what I should make of this. Suggestions are welcome!

Re : Albotricha?
Although the paraphyses look empty, I guess that this species belongs to those Lachnums which turn reddish, because the hairs obviously contain VBs.

Without croziers I only know L. controversum and L. caricis. Did you measure the hair length?
Stefan Jakobsson, 12-06-2021 11:21
Re : Albotricha?
Yes, the length is more than 100. I did not find a matching Lachnum.

Re : Albotricha?
You don't have a macor and still fresh apos? I would look more for the VBs, do they also occur in the paraphyses? More hairs tips would be welcome, how do they look when collapsed?

Re : Albotricha?
Here a few bad photos - unfortunately too much air bubbles. There are some few apos left, which I will have a look at later today. They were growing mixed with Psilachnum acutum.

Re : Albotricha?
Yes, here the VBs are abundant in some basal hair cells. Hair length I found around 80-110 µm. Trapped air is a problem especially in rough-haired species. These VBs definitely exclude A. acutipila, besides the absence of crystals, but points to a Lachnum. No idea as yet.

Re : Albotricha?
Unfortunately the small grazing beasts have done their job and the two apothecia I saw last night are now gone.

However, on another piece of Typha I found another Lachnum with more typical hairs. I think it could be Lachnum schoenoplecti even though it is not a perfect match with any of the three descriptions I could locate. No very big differences though. The spores are 15.3-20.6 × 1.8-2.3, asci 45-66 × 4.1-5.4 and the parafyses are rather narrow 69-94 × 2.8-3.8 µm. The hairs are up to at least 80 long and up 6 wide at the capitulum, with a few septa. New for me if I am right.

Re : Albotricha?
This sounds reasonable. The species was also reported from Carex.

Re : Albotricha?
Thank you!

In the mean time I found also Orbilia rectispora, which seems to be new north of Denmark.
