Hi!
Black (when dry), solitary or somewhat clustered, sessile to very short-stipitate apothecia on dead, decorticated branch of Pinus sylvetris, Central Norway.
Asci 75-125 x 12-18 microns (in water), IKI-. Asci mostly with granular contents, but a few beginning to form septate spore, difficult to measure presicely. Paraphyses agglutinated in a greenish/olivaceus matrix (resinous material?), apparently with transverse, elongate "bodies". Subhymenium brownish.
I wonder if Claussenomyces atrovirens can be this dark when it dries. Is Patellaria atrata an option?

This is Tympanis. I cannot see the primary ascospores. Do you have the collection dry and are you going to keep it in your own herbarium? if so, I would like to know if you do not mind to send me a piece of the collection with some mature apothecia. I am working in this genus and I would like to study the morphology and get sequences. If you are interested in help me you can write me an email to lquijull@gmail.com and I can explain you more if you are trying to identify the species by yourself

Of course! I studied Tympanis alnea the other day and I knew I had seen this kind of asci recently. I just couldn't couple it to Tympanis because this one looked so different, macroscopically.
The speciemen I have at hand is a duplicate. I will check with the finder how much more material there is. I am sure he (Håkon Holien) will be more than happy to provide you with mature apothecia.

Thanks Edvin. Tympanis is very variable in its macromorphology, apothecia can be brown-orange, green or black and solitary or aggregate, whit or without white pruina over them. I will be happy to talk with you or your collegue about the collections that you have.
