Orbilia eucalypti rather than O. coccinella?
Hardware Tony, 25-01-2021 15:15
Hardware TonyI have found an Orbilia species on Picea albies (almost next to the Stictis sps referred to earlier this week) which in the 'books' suggested O. coccinella, with the paras, spores and orange tinted colouration that this was this species. On referring to Otto's et al incredible two volumes on Orbiomycetes rceently published would I be incorrect in thinking this should now be known as O. eucalypti?

Asco spores 3.97 - 4.96 x 1.85µm unseriate, 0.3mm ascomata with pale orange tints to lilac with blunt shoulders to asci tips at 36 - 42µm, No bluing in Melzers, Paras showing distinct large paddle type tips at 2.58 x 36µm, mostly same ht as asci.

with thanks

I think you are right with O. eucalypti. But your methods are not suitable, you should avoid pressure and carefully mount in water to have living elements. Not even the spores are alive I fear.

The pinkish colour is not very typical but frequent anyway in this difficult species. Genetically it is a swarm of various indistunguishable genotypes, nobody understands this.

With thanks Otto.  I might be a little heavy handed, one to note for sure.
