Gray, reddening Hymenoscyphus(?)
Juuso Äikäs, 30-06-2019 08:43
I found these yesterday in a wet, muddy depression, growing on pieces of moist wood. I didn't first think of Hymenoscyphus when I saw these but the microscopy is something like it, I think. The apos seem to redden with age and/or when damaged. Some of the asci colored orange in Melzer's and some of them had amyloid apical rings. The spore dimensions are 14.5-20 x 4-5 micrometres. Any thoughts?

Could you please clarify if coniferous or not? How large are the apos?
The iodine reaction is rather faint. Did you also check in Lugol?  This and the croziers excludes Phalohelotium fulvidulum, but it could be of this group of species.

My subfolder "griseobrunneum ~amyloid H+" might come closest though the excipulum tends to be brownish. You find it in the folder Phaeohelotium monticola group.

I got the impression that it's hardwood, but I'm not sure. The biggest apos were about 3mm in diameter. I don't unfortunately have any Lugol.

Hardwood is easy to verify, you only need a cross section and view either under a handlens (20x) or larger.

I don't have the sample anymore but I'll bring some more if I return to the place soon.
