Belonioscyphella central Sweden
Johan Myhrer, 08-10-2018 20:39
Today I visitied a mossy rock where I found Belonioscyphella hypnorum last year. The wheather conditions today where similar to last year (but a month earlier), so I hoped to find some more specimens for herbarium. And indeed there where some pinkish "discos" on Schistidium! But in the microscope I got confused, spores where huge and with at least 7 septas, sometimes more. The larger spores measured up to 62x15µm. The septation must indicate B. pluriseptata? Or could this be overmatured B. hypnorum? They do not look as fresh as those I found last year on the same rock.

Re : Belonioscyphella central Sweden

Bonsoir Johan,

Nice collection  !

In the collections we studied with Zuzana Egertova (see paper in Ascomycete.org 2016) the supposed overmatured spores of B. hypnorum never got this regular 7-septate pattern .

But the spore size you give here  are nearly twice the normal size,  even  for B. pluriseptata. The ascus in your pictures look dead .

Are all apothecia in the same state ?

Amitiés. Michel

Re : Belonioscyphella central Sweden
I didn't find any fresh looking apothecia today. Unfortunately we have already had temperatures around zero during night for a week now :-/

I think it is pluriseptata because hypnorum has only 3(-5)-septate spores.

Do you have a scale for your second photo? I presume the middle spore measures around 50 x 8 µm.

Re : Belonioscyphella central Sweden
Some new measurements give average spore size of 50x10,5µm.

O.k. It may be that the spores are already a bit overmature, because the asci are not alive anymore, although the spores in this ascus look pretty good.

Re : Belonioscyphella central Sweden

So we agree

I once received a collection from Finland by Marja Pennanen but it was in such a poor state that I could not document it properly neither could we have it sequenced. Amazingly, it was also on the same site than her collections of B. hypnorum.

I do not know of any sequence for this species (unless a late one ?) and it would be interesting to compare it with B. hypnorum.

I propose to receive an exsic if you have enough .
