Chlorosplenium Question
Danny Newman, 24-10-2016 19:36
Danny NewmanHello AscoFrance,

I write again on behalf of Mushroom Observer, which is always in great need of more ascomycete expertise, and always grateful for what expertise it has already received. The latest debate is here:

http://mushroomobserver.org/253206

Michael Kuo, an American amateur and creator of the website MushroomExpert.com, describes Chlorosplenium chlora and C. hypochlora as being macroscopically indistinguishable from one another. The descriptions of each species in Dixon, J.R. 1974. Chlorosplenium and its segregates. I. Introduction and the genus Chlorosplenium. Mycotaxon. 1(2):65-104 (http://www.mykoweb.com/systematics/journals/Mycotaxon/Mycotaxon%20v001n2.pdf) do contain some differences, but in the notes for C. hypochlora, that species is said to only differ "on drying and in ascus and spore characters."

Are the two species in fact macroscoically indistinguishable? Are their distributions/seasons/substrates separate or overlapping?

Many thanks in advance,

-Danny

Re : Chlorosplenium Question
Images of Chl. chlora you can find in my folder:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B5SeyOEkxxZhYVBtRGpVc2Q5M0k

Chl. hypochlora I do not know, but it seems to have distinctly longer spores (up to 15 instead of 9 µm).

The macros on your link can be everything, including Calycina (Bisporella) claroflava.
