Stalked Asco
Malcolm Greaves, 25-08-2016 16:12
Malcolm GreavesThis was found in an area of woodland damaged by tree felling.
Pale orange, I thought it might have been a Scutellinia, about 5mm across with a stalk, mostly submerged, 8mm long.
The asci tips were blued with Lugol and the spores were 10.5 x 4.5µ.
Can anyone suggest a name or group?
Thanks
Mal

Re : Stalked Asco
The pore (inoperculate asci) blued by IKI excludes a Scutellinia. This could be an Hymenosyphus species

Re : Stalked Asco
Or more probably a Moellerodiscus.

Re : Stalked Asco
Is there anything I could look for to confirm this suggestion?

Re : Stalked Asco
yes, different things:
For the genus I am sure, but for the species, which is almost impossible to determine, would be good to know
- the substrate (a leaf? which plant?)
- excipulum of globulosa?
- asci with croziers?
- living paraphyses with large yellowish refrctive vacuole?
- more measurements of spore size

There have been quite a few postings in Ascofrance about this genus. Currently one can identify M. lentus, but the situation ist much more coplicated.

Hi Zotto

What's the typical host for M. lentus?

Re : Stalked Asco
The literature says it is plurivorous. This may be, but not everything is M. lentus.
Can't remember which is the type substrate.

Thanks Zotto. I will see I can find the details you mentioned.

Bonjour Zotto, Malcolm & Enrique,

in Dumont 1976 Scleritiniaceae XI - On Moellerodiscus (= Ciboriopsis) we read :
Holotype. -Ceylon, Peradeniya, Thwaites 104, unidentified leaves, Nov 1887 (K).

In Berkeley & Broome 1873 (75) : on dead leaves, capsules, 1c. Nov. 1867

Amitiés
Michel

Re : Stalked Asco
Zotto
The substrate is difficult because although it was close to oak (with a leaf in the photo) there had been extensive tree felling of conifer and there looked to be needles in the soil that was collected with the specimen.
The excipulum was globular.
I could see no sign of croziers.
The paraphyses had a refactive vacuole but not sure it was yellow.
The spores were between 9 - 11 x 4 - 4.5
I hope this helps.

Re : Stalked Asco
Clearly Moellerodiscus. I am quite sure it has croziers, the ascus base looks so.
Your last photo shows the vacuoles.
So I would file it as M. lentus. But I see the spores are too broad, M. lentus is more around 2.5-3.5 µm. Sorry, but it is a crazy genus.

Re : Stalked Asco
Thanks Zotto
I will record as Moellerodiscus lentus but make a note that the spores are too wide on current understanding.
