Lachnum (Brunnipila, Dascyscyphus) fuscescens?
Steve Clements, 08-07-2015 14:33
Hi,
This minute fringed disco was abundant on dead leaves of beech and oak (Quercus) (Fagus sylvatica) leaves.
Found 9/6/15. Apothecia almost sessile/very short stalked, opening up in the incubator after a week to 0.85 mm. Hymenium very pale brown/whitish. Fringed by prominent hairs up to 95 x 4-5, commonly 5-septate, brown, minutely hirsute, slightly swollen at the ends (to 6 wide).
Free spores were few, hyaline, 7-8 x 2 (in water) . With some very small guttules.
Asci up to 50 x 5, tips blueing in Lugol, with croziers.
Paraphyses were notable as they extended beyond the asci. Lanceolate, up to 70 x3-4, single septa near base.
Apart from the lack of crystalline matter on the tips of the hairs (lost on preparing specimens?). Oil immersion used for most microscopy.
I thought that Lachnum fuscescens was a reasonable match (is this now Brunnipila?), but I would be pleased to be corrected.
Regards,
Steve

Salut,
Cordialement,
Steve

Yes, it is Brunnipila fuscescens. That genus differs from Lachnum not only in the brown hair wall but also in the very short apical hair cells. Crystals are sometimes absent, maybe they were present at earlier development stages? Do you have also young apothecia?

Thankyou Zotto - my colleague took a photo of another specimen covered in white crystals,
