unknown pyrenomycete on Bambusae (Arundinaria sp.)
Björn Wergen, 24-11-2014 22:18
Björn WergenHi friends,

I have collected a unitunicate pyrenomycete growing on dead bambusae culms with some interesting features:
Ascoma growing on the surface of the culms, breaking through the top layer and clustered to 2-5 perithecia in a stromatal tissue, all over black and not easy to detect (or to differ from other black dots), perithecia about 0,2-0,4mm, having inconspicous ostiolar regions, occasionally flattened or appearing to be collapsed.

Spores are 17-21x4,5-7,5µm, 3septated and somewhat pointed at both endings, smooth in H2O, but there are little dots roughening the surface visible in IKI or CR, hardly constricted at septa, recognizable only in mature state. Asci 100-120x6,5-9µm, short stalked, mostly uniseriate, with a refractive apical structure reddening (pale red) in CR (congophil), but IKI negative.
Paraphyses small and indistinct, at some parts swollen, septated and filled with some droplets, not connected and only a few µm longer than the asci. Perithecial wall 25-45µm, consisting of paler inner cell structures and dark brown outer ones, somewhat compressed.

I do not know this species unless it has some distinct characteristics which lead me to think on Diaporthales due to its refractive congophilous apical apparatus and the 3septated spores, which however remind me on the spores of Lentomitella or some species of Annulatascaceae. Perhaps someone has another idea.

By the way: I am interested in any literature about bambusicolous ascomycetes.

regards,

Bambusicolous Pyrenomycetes, an annotated checklist
Myconet vol. 1(2): 25-78, January 1998
