Calycina sp.
Nicolas VAN VOOREN, 05-11-2013 18:20
Nicolas VAN VOORENHere is a Calycina (I mean) species that I cannot identify...
It was collected on a dead and decorticated trunk of Populus or Salix, there were thousands of specimens!
Apothecia small, Ø 0.2-0.8 mm, stipitate, totally white.
Ectal excipulum of t. ± prismatica (see picture), with some short hairs, up to 38 µm. Medullary excipulum of t. ± intricata, gelatinous in the stipe.
Asci 119-136 x 7.5-9 µm, 8-spored, with crozier, apical ring IKI+ (bb), type Calycina.
Paraphyses filiform, Ø 2-2.5 µm, without VB, but staining in blue in aqueous cresyl.
Spores ± fusoid, ± curved, 15-19 (20) x 4-4.5 (5) µm, 2-celled (in and outside asci), OCI~4.

It seems to be close to C. subparilis.
Any idea?

Re : Calycina sp.
Are there not 4 large and 4 small spores? Calycina lactea?

Re : Calycina sp.
I just made a new mount, and you're right I saw some asci with 4 normal spores and 4 aborted spores!
Thanks.

Re : Calycina sp.
Yes, it is. The crowded aspect is typical. Also the growth in creeks close to running water, was it?

VBs are present but not very refractive. Earlier it was called Hymenoscyphus ellisii.

Yes, the habitat is a forest on a island on the Rhône, mainly composed by Salix and Populus (and some Quercus).

Re : Calycina sp.
Bonjour Nico et Zotto,

Amazingly I found it at the very same period last year , on November 7h. , in a Normandy marsh.
I called it Bisporella lactea as I was not yet awre of the new combination in Calicyna .

Here is an image of this collection spores.

Amitiés
Michel

Re : Calycina sp.
Yes, Michel, nice Calycina spores. :-)  But not lactea :-(
What size? how many spores in the ascus? IKI blue or red? Apos reddening or not?

Re : Calycina sp.
Oups !
I realize that B. lactea was a preliminary name but the spores shown above look more like those of C. heterospora

Re : Calycina sp.
Zotto, I knew you would notice the error as  I was trying to give some explanation , but too late !
I will answer your questions when at home with my documentation of the collection.
